Wado Ryu is one of the four major styles of Japanese karate. A mix of Okinawan Shotokan and Japanese Jujitsu, Wado Ryu is a very balanced martial art with equal emphasis on leg and hand techniques. It is known for its graceful and fluent body movements and subtle lateral shifts to avoid opponents.
Founded by Hironori Ohstuka in the early part of the 20th century, Wado Ryu literally means, "The Way of Peace". A descendent of the ancient samurai class, Ohtsuka created a style based on honor.
Japan Karate Institute Daniel Island is a traditional dojo that can trace its lineage of instructors directly to Ohtsuka and the person widely regarded as the father of modern day karate, Gichin Funakoshi.
Japan Karate Institute was founded by Sensei Dale Coker (6th Dan) and is headquartered in West Ashley. There are also locations in North Charleston and Moncks Corner
